South West MEP Graham Watson has today signed a written declaration in the European Parliament calling on the Commission to act on corruption in European sport.
Following the signing, Watson commented, 'from match fixing in tennis right up to allegations within the hierarchy of FIFA, corruption continues to blight some of our most prized sports and competitions which can only distract from some of the enjoyment so many people receive from participating and viewing sporting events.'
Recent events such as the probe into alleged bribery allegations within FIFA and match fixing probes into major Snooker and Cricket matches have brought corruption high up on the agenda.
'I was pleased to see the FA raise its head above the parapet last week to denounce the election of a man mired in allegations and dodgy dealings as the head of world football. The UKmust continue to take a lead in combating corruption and I hope my fellow MEPs in the South West support this declaration.'
