In addition to the Lib Dems historic victory delivering an MP for Chippenham the Lib Dems in Swindon have seen success in the local elections and an increase in support in the parliamentary elections.

Lib Dem Andy Harrison won a sensational victory over Labour in their heartland seat of Penhill. The Lib Dems also saw their vote share across the town double as the Tories saw their support slump by a nearly a quarter compared to last time. Meanwhile the Lib Dem parliamentary candidates in both Swindon South and Swindon North saw their vote share increase.

Swindon Campaign Manager Cllr Dave Wood, who was also re-elected in Eastcott, said,

"Swindon voters have started to punish Conservative Swindon Borough Council. This is the first time in years the Tories have seen a massive drop in support as their share of the vote dropped by 22.4%. Most of this 12.3% swing from the Conservatives benefitted the Lib Dems, as our vote share increased by over 50%.

"The tide has started to turn as the complacent conservatives are increasingly taking the town for granted."

Key successes for the Swindon Lib Dems include:

· A swing to the Lib Dems of 4.4% in Swindon North and 0.6% in Swindon South

· A 7.3% swing to the Lib Dems in the local election, increasing the share of the vote from 14.5% to 21.8%

· A 14.2% swing in Penhill, delivering a win for new Cllr Andy Harrison

· An increased share of the vote in 16 of the 19 areas of Swindon holding elections

· A swing of 10% or more to the Lib Dems in Abbey Meads, Covingham and Nythe, Haydon Wick, Moredon, St Philip, St Margaret and Western ward

· Lib Dem candidate Shirley Burnham halved the Tory majority in Old Town and Lawn
