Lib Dems 'Three Times as Green' as other Parties

Cllr Stan Pajak, Leader of the Swindon Liberal Democrats

The Lib Dems have been voted the greenest of the three main political parties in an audit by Britain's environmental groups, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, published today.

The Lib Dems, regarded as the party with the most long-standing commitment to the environment, come out on top despite efforts by the two biggest parties to catch up. But today's report is bad news for David Cameron, who has made the environment a symbol of his attempt to change the image of the Conservative Party. Despite his efforts, the Tories are rated behind the two other parties. The report scored the parties on a traffic light system. Results: LD 3 green, Lab 1 green, Con 0 green.

Chris Huhne MP, the Party's Environment spokesperson, said:

"The Liberal Democrats continue to set the green standard that other parties need to meet. We are three times as green as the Labour Party, and streets ahead of the Tories. We have an ambitious and realistic objective for a zero-carbon Britain, tackling carbon emissions from every part of the economy: transport, housing, offices and factories. Despite all their warm words, it is telling that the Tories fail to get a single green light. They are still divided between those like John Gummer who want to go green and those like John Redwood who do not. While the other parties may talk green, only the Lib Dems mean it."

Swindon Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Stan Pajak (Eastcott) added:

"This national recognition is also replicated locally. In Swindon it is only the Lib Dems who have argued to save Coate and the Front Garden front development, increase investment in public transport and save the Park and Rides."
