Residents Parking: The Verdict

The Lib Dem FOCUS Team keeping up the pressure on Residents' Parking reform

The long awaited reform of Residents' Parking in Old Town and Town Centre has, after great delay, finally surfaced.

Cllr Stan Pajak said: "There are some good proposals for reform, some of them only there because our insistence, but the long delays and confusion over finances have somewhat muddied the waters."

The Good:

Park for Free in Council Car Parks

The Tories did not want to include this but the Lib Dems successfully pushed for it. We will be allowed to park for free out of hours in Council car parks. Even if this does not directly benefit you it will take pressure off the whole area - this can only be a good thing!

Stop Pressure from Development

House division should be stopped and new developments will not be allowed street permits. This will stop the increasing number of new permits needed.

Creating more Parking Spaces!

It has been shown we have far too many yellow lines! At least 300 new spaces can be created from getting rid of unnecessary lines, and there are likely to be many more not yet identified!

Special Circumstances Appeals

Rules are currently too 'hard and fast', there are a lot of special cases. An appeals panel will be formed so exceptions can be made.

Vulnerable People Provision

There will be extra visitors' books for people with carers and house-calling GPs in the area can be given a permit.

The Bad:

Unacceptable Time Delay!

The good reforms are simple, common sense solutions. There seems to have been months and months of unnecessary delays (see page opposite).

We Still Don't Know When This Will All Happen!

Your Lib Dem FOCUS Team insisted that reforms should have timetables, a guarantee of when things would happen. The Tories ignored this. Who knows when these reforms will go ahead?

Where is the Money?

The FOCUS Team said it should be clear where the money is coming from. The Tories ignored this. We have some great proposals but we STILL don't know how or if they can be paid for!

Double Priced Permits

The FOCUS Team pushed for the 2006 survey to ask whether people want permits to decrease in cost. The Tories ignored this!
