People who live locally and care: There are Lib Dem FOCUS Teams, like this one from Freshbrook and Grange Park, allover Swindon
The Swindon Liberal Democrats have, today, launched the '10 Reasons for Vote Lib Dem locally' this Thursday:
1. Crime: We know national resources need to increase the Police presence on the streets, hence why we want to Scrap ID Card to put 10,000 more Police on the streets. However a difference can be made at local level - as we have been doing in Eastcott - by holding public meetings that are advertised to every house and allow residents to work with the Police to help direct their resources to where and when they are needed the most.
2. Regeneration of Town Centre: We want to build a town centre with a University and cultural quarter that is marked by safety and open space, not by boxy buildings, micro-flats and unnecessary office space.
3. Regeneration of the Suburbs: Some of our suburban estates - such as West Swindon - have Centres in dire need of regeneration. Areas such as the Freshbrook Centre are being ignored by the Tory Council.
4. Preservation of Historic Buildings: We believe Swindon needs to save and preserve the few Historical Buildings it has left - such as the Mechanics and the Locarno - before it's too late!
5. Saving our Green Space. The Liberal Democrats are the only main party to have consistently opposed the moves to bulldoze our green spaces, such as Coate and the Front Garden.
6. Recycling. We first introduced kerbside recycling - in a joint budget in 2001 - and want full kerbside recycling of all materials immediately. This should have happened years ago!
7. Graffiti. The Tory Council has been trying gimmicky new initiatives that seem not to be working. However in Lib Dem areas of Swindon we have been fighting graffiti proactively. After a Lib Dem crime public meeting where residents said graffiti was their priority, local Police arrested the top offender for the area.
8. Keeping our Schools Local. We believe successful schools should stay open and were appalled by the Tory Council's closing of good schools in West Swindon where student numbers were rising. We believed Commonweal should remain in Old Town when the Tory Council was supportive of it moving to a potential flood plane in the Front Garden.
9. Improved Public Transport. Our bus routes allover Swindon have been slashed in recent years and the Tories threatened the Wroughton Park and Ride this year. We will never tempt people out of cars without significantly improving public transport!
10. Local Parking. People parking outside their own houses has become an increasing problem in areas like Old Town, Town Centre, Rodbourne, Penhill and Abbey Meads. These issues can be tackled before it becomes out of hand, but only with the local hard work the Liberal Democrats are willing to put in.
If you support our vision for the town we urge you to vote Liberal Democrat in Swindon on Thursday.
