Following the Crime Forum meeting organised by the Lib Dem Eastcott Councillors, Swindon Borough Council is now working with the Probation Service to have offenders clear up graffiti.
Cllr Wiltshire (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said:
"We support this fantastic way to clear graffiti and congratulate the Council's anti-social behaviour unit for all their hard work in achieving this.
"A scheme where offenders clear graffiti both saves Council Tax payers money and acts as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
"However this does need to be backed up with good local policing. We understand that following our meeting one of the main graffiti culprits in the Old Town area has been arrested."
The Crime meeting identified the Savernake Street children's play park as one of the worst areas for graffiti in Old Town. Offenders will be clearing the area of graffiti.
Cllr Wiltshire continued:
"We are also asking all residents in the area of the play park to seek their opinion on over-painting the wall. Should it be replaced with a mural? If so, what theme should it carry? We are also seeking residents' ideas on deterring graffiti in Old Town. We hope that an effort by the engaged community will help improve this area."
