A Swindon Bus
The Lib Dems on Swindon Borough Council are proposing at this week's full Council that pensioner bus pass holder - the self-styled 'twerlies' - should be able to travel from 9am.
Cllr Pajak, Leader of the Lib Dem Group, said:
"By only allowing 'twerlies' to board at 9.30am the Council is, yet again, only doing what it has to by law. This means pensioners are left with a messy system that defies common sense.
"Residents tell us all the time that the buses are empty from 9am but many are jam-packed by 9.30am when the 'twerlies' are finally allowed to board. This may actually be resulting in a loss for the Bus Company, as fee-paying travelers frequent tell me they cannot board the buses at 9.30am because they are too full."
"This system is complete madness, and as usual it's the public that has to suffer whilst the Council just talks about budgets and fails to realise that if they just talked to bus drivers they'd be able to let the 'twerlies' on board earlier."
Elsewhere in Wiltshire Lib Dem lead West Wiltshire Council allows pensioners to travel from 9am and Lib Dem lead North Wiltshire Council allows pensioners to travel on buses that are quiet enough at 9am.
