The Swindon Liberal Democrats have welcomed campaign success to keep Commonweal from moving to the Front Garden, and have reiterated their opposition to the closure of Lower Shaw Farm.
In July 2006 the Swindon Lib Dem Councillors cemented their opposition to the bulldozing of Commonweal: Cllr Dave Wood (LD, Eastcott) said:
"It seems clear that the governors of the school have been forced into a corner. The front garden is being bulldozed, and now Commonweal is expected to move because of this disastrous decision."
Reacting to the news, Cllr Stan Pajak commented:
"Although the parents have mounted an excellent campaign, and the Lib Dems have been campaigning to save the school, I am dubious about the Council saying that this is a victory for people-pressure. I suspect that finances, environmental and transport difficulties were a factor. Moving Commonweal was always a badly thought out non-solution on the part of the Council."
"However if the saving of Commonweal is a victory for people-power after all, I will wait for the Council's announcement that it will save the excellent facility of Lower Shaw Farm in response to pressure from the public and Adver readers."
