Under Threat: Commonweal School
The Liberal Democrats on Swindon Borough Council have resolved to actively oppose the closure of Commonweal School and siting the school in the Front Garden / Southern Development Area (SDA).
We are backing the Commonweal Campaign, whose website can be found here:
Cllr Dave Wood (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said:
"It seems clear that the Council have forced the governors of the school into a corner. They are bulldozing the front garden, and now expect Commonweal to move because of their disastrous decision. The Council should clear up its own mess, not expect Old Town to lose an essential part of the community because the Council has neither foresight or imagination."
Cllr Martin Wiltshire (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said:
"Commonweal is an excellent school that is very popular and close to the many families living in this community. Any new school that may be built in the SDA should be designed to suit the needs of this new community and Commonweal left to continue the good work it is doing where it is. Closure of Commonweal is unnecessary, unwanted and will disadvantage many local families."
Cllr Stan Pajak (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said:
"As any estate agent will always tell you the most important feature of any home is location, location, location. The proposed move of Commonweal school from the heart of the Old Town community to the Front Garden development is therefore the most important decision the school will ever take. I believe it would be fundamental that existing and soon-to-be parents at the school support such a move. It is clear that this not the case and most parents share my view that the move is wrong for reasons ranging from environment to community concerns. The Governors must seek a mandate from the parents and future parents for their decision."
The Liberal Democrats will be launching their campaign this summer. Please check back for more details soon.
