In a risky move for Swindon the Tories on Swindon Borough Council licensing have decided to ignore the issues around sex shops for up to another three years.
Whilst Councillors from all the other parties abstained the Conservatives bulldozed through opposition to the licensing of sex shops and even suggested the issue was buried for up to three years.
Licensing member Cllr Dave Wood said:
"I abstained from the vote because the consultation was poor - only community groups were asked their opinions. Groups opinions are crucial, but I was shocked that town residents weren't given a say.
"The suggestion that the issue be shelved for up to three years would be dreadful for the town. Evidence was given that hardcore pornography was being sold illegally in areas children frequent, such as leisure centre car parks.
"Resolving this issue quickly could stop such illegal trade and protect the town's children. The committee was also worried that licensed sex shops could operate in a regenerated town centre, but the delay would allow unlicensed sex shops to open in the town centre.
"Unless there is proper consultation and the issue is resolved soon, the Council will have seriously let down our town."
