Shaw Forest tree-plant, Sunday 6th November at 10am
An invitation has been sent out to the Swindon community to come and join the Great Western Community Forest team and Shaw Forest Protection Group to plant your 'Family Tree' at the growing Forest Park in West Swindon this Sunday 6th November from 10am to 3pm.
Shaw Forest Park is located off Mead Way in West Swindon behind the former yellow Renault Factory and adjacent to the Nine Elms and Shaw housing estates.
Liberal Democrat West Swindon Councilor, Chris Shepherd said:
"This is the first opportunity for the public to plant trees since the successful campaign against proposed development of a sports campus on the site last year. The Great Western Community Forest volunteers have planted more than 46,000 trees on the Shaw site over the past 11 years with the help of local residents. I would encourage those who care about their local Swindon environment to come and show their support.
"Find out how the Forest is taking shape. There'll be hand puppets, hand printing, hand painting and lots more. Why not come and give us a hand!"
Approximately 1500 Family Trees will be available to plant, a mix of Ash, Alder, Hornbeam and other species suitable for the site. Just bring your spades, wrap up warm and don't forget your wellies! The Community Forest group will provide everything else!
Due to the nature of the site, it is important that all children are accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the day. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead.
If you need to drive to the event there will be a limited car parking space at Clarion off Hillmead Drive, opposite the main entrance to Shaw Forest. There will also be limited disabled parking on the site itself.
Sunday's tree plant event is sponsored by local businesses Nationwide and Intel.
The Great Western Community Forest is one of 12 Community Forests in England where local people and organisations are working together to create a better environment. This exciting environmental project is creating a rich mosaic of woodlands, green spaces and areas for wildlife in and around Swindon and the surrounding towns and villages.
The Great Western Community Forest project is providing a high quality environment for homes, employment, education and recreation. It covers 168 square miles, stretching from Wootton Bassett to Faringdon, the Downs to the Thames.
