Letter to the Evening Advertiser from Liberal Democrat activist Jane Mactaggart
Dear Sir
Your article 'Kennedy's on the Trail' referred to my support for Julia Drown in the 2001 general election. That support was based upon her performance as my MP and the Labour manifesto commitment not to introduce top up fees. During the last parliament, Julia Drown and Labour let me down. Julia supported the war in Iraq - I was passionately opposed to it. She voted for student top-up fees against her own manifesto commitment - as a mature student I see the hugely damaging effect these fees will have.
I am supporting the Liberal Democrats in this election and, in particular, Dr Sue Stebbing, my local candidate, who will make an excellent MP for South Swindon. I suspect there are many Liberal Democrat supporters in Swindon who, like me, voted Labour last time and will not do so again. Charles Kennedy was right when he said that there were unlikely to be many Liberal Democrats minded to give Labour their support after the last four years of broken promises and spin.
I urge everyone in Swindon who feels let down by this government and dislikes the right-wing policies of the Tories to vote for Mike Evemy or Sue Stebbing, Swindon's Liberal Democrat candidates - they represent the real alternative to Labour. The hard lesson I have learned is that the only way to get Liberal Democrat policies implemented is to vote Liberal Democrat.
Yours sincerely
Jane Mactaggart
