Swindon Lib Dem activists welcome the start of the campaign
Responding to the news that Tony Blair has named May 5th as the day for the General Election, the Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Swindon North, Mike Evemy, said:
"At last, after months of speculation, we can start the campaign proper. Liberal Democrats are the real alternative and over the past few months, we have been getting a great response to our policies from the people of this area. More and more people agree that locally and nationally it is time to do things differently.
"Swindon needs MPs who will fight for local schools and hospitals. We need MPs who will campaign for better pensions and for real local action to get the affordable housing and decent transport that Swindon is crying out for."
Dr Sue Stebbing, the Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Swindon South added:
"Liberal Democrats are offering something different; we want freedom for the individual, fairness for all and we think it is time to restore people's trust in elected politicians. We want a tax system that does not punish the people with lowest incomes, better public services close to our homes and real action on protecting the environment both locally and globally - from preventing the proposed destruction at Coate to tackling global warming.
"The Liberal Democrats will be taking a positive message to local people in this campaign. I am determined to be a strong and independent voice for Swindon."
