Lib Dems accuse Tories of Jobs for the Boys

January 24, 2005 12:00 AM

Liberal Democrats have today criticised a proposal from the Leader of the Council to appoint another Tory councillor to his Cabinet. The new post will be responsible for Community and Partnership, currently in the portfolio of Fionuala Foley as Lead Member for Cultural Change.

Cllr Mike Evemy, Lib Dem Shadow Finance Spokesperson (Lib Dem, Eastcott) commented:

"This is evidence that the Tories have been found wanting in their commitment to the community.

"Last year, the Tories deleted the portfolio for Community and Equalities and the Council has subsequently been criticised by government inspectors for a lack of community involvement.

"Their commitment to the community will become obvious to everyone next month when their budget is expected to make £252,000 cuts to the voluntary sector in Swindon. This new Cabinet member is being brought in to front those cuts and the damage they will do to our communities in Swindon.'

Liberal Democrats have proposed moving the grant process for the Voluntary Sector to an external agency in a bid to halt Tory proposed cuts to front-line services. This option will be discussed at Full Council on Thursday.
